MijnOverheid offers several vital functions that significantly benefit expats:

1. Berichtenbox (Message Box):

• Digital Mail: This is the most important feature. Government organisations like the Belastingdienst (Tax Authorities), UWV (Employee Insurance Agency), SVB (Sociale Verzekeringsbank), and your municipality send official letters and documents directly to your Berichtenbox.
• Email Notifications: You'll receive an email to your registered email address whenever new mail arrives in your Berichtenbox, ensuring you don't miss critical information.
• Secure & Environmentally Friendly: It's a secure way to receive sensitive information and reduces paper waste.

2. Mijn Gegevens (My Data):

• View Personal Data: Access your personal data registered in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP – Personal Records Database), such as your address, civil status, and nationality.
• Property Data: View information about your property (if you own one) from the Kadaster (Land Registry).
• Pension Overview: Get an overview of your accrued pension entitlements.

3. Mijn Lopende Zaken (My Current Affairs):

Activating Your Berichtenbox

When you first log in to MijnOverheid with your DigiD, you will be prompted to activate your Berichtenbox. This usually involves:

1. Logging in with your DigiD.
2. Agreeing to the terms and conditions for digital communication.
3. Providing and confirming your email address for notifications.

It is highly recommended to activate your Berichtenbox immediately to ensure you receive all official communications promptly.

• Check Regularly: Even with email notifications, make a habit of logging into your MijnOverheid Berichtenbox regularly to check for new messages.
• Link Agencies: When you activate your Berichtenbox, you'll be asked which government agencies you want to receive digital mail from. It's best to select all relevant ones (e.g., Belastingdienst, Gemeente, UWV, SVB) to centralise your communication.
• Update Email: Ensure the email address linked to your MijnOverheid account is current and checked frequently.
