Registering with a Pharmacy ('Apotheek')
Just as you register with a GP, it's highly recommended to register with a specific pharmacy ('apotheek') close to your home. This allows the pharmacy to maintain a complete overview of all your medications, preventing potentially dangerous interactions and ensuring continuity of care.
When your GP sends a prescription, they will usually send it electronically to your registered pharmacy. This makes picking up medication very convenient.
How to Register:
- Visit in Person: The easiest way is to visit your chosen pharmacy and inform them you'd like to register. Bring your ID, BSN (Citizen Service Number), and health insurance card.
- Online: Some larger pharmacy chains may offer online registration.
- GP Assistance: Your GP practice can often facilitate registration with a local pharmacy for you.
Obtaining Prescriptions
Most prescription-only medications in the Netherlands require a prescription from a Dutch doctor (your GP or a specialist).
- From Your GP: For most common ailments, your GP will issue the prescription. They typically send it electronically to your registered pharmacy. You can then collect it usually within a few hours, often receiving a text message when it's ready.
- From a Specialist: If a hospital specialist prescribes medication, they will also send the prescription to your registered pharmacy.
- International Prescriptions: Prescriptions from outside the Netherlands are generally not valid directly. You will need to consult a Dutch GP who can then issue a local prescription if they deem the medication necessary and appropriate within Dutch guidelines. Bring all relevant medical documentation.
Repeat Prescriptions!
For chronic conditions, your GP will often issue a repeat prescription. Many practices have an online portal, an app, or a dedicated phone line for ordering repeat prescriptions, which are then sent to your pharmacy.
Medication Dispensing and Generics
Dutch pharmacies typically dispense generic versions of medications where available. These are chemically identical to brand-name drugs but are often significantly cheaper. Your pharmacist is highly qualified and will provide clear instructions on usage. Don't hesitate to ask questions, as most pharmacists speak English.
Pharmacies also stock a range of over-the-counter medications and health products, similar to a 'drogisterij' (drugstore), but with more specialized advice available.
Costs and Insurance Coverage for Medications
Most prescription medications are covered by your basic Dutch health insurance ('basisverzekering'). However, the costs of medication do count towards your mandatory 'eigen risico' (deductible), which is €385 in 2025.
You will pay the costs of medications out-of-pocket until your annual 'eigen risico' is met. After that, your insurance covers the remaining costs for the year.
