Understanding BRP Registration for Expats in the Netherlands

What is the BRP?

The BRP is the national database that records fundamental information about residents of the Netherlands. It contains details such as your name, date and place of birth, nationality, marital status, and most importantly, your registered address and Burgerservicenummer (BSN).

This system ensures that various government agencies, such as the tax authorities (Belastingdienst), healthcare providers, and pension funds, have access to up-to-date information about you. It's the foundation for almost all administrative interactions you'll have in the country.

Why BRP Registration is Mandatory

Registering with the BRP is not just a formality; it's a legal requirement for anyone planning an extended stay (over four months) in the Netherlands. More importantly, it is your gateway to receiving a BSN, which is essential for almost every aspect of life here:

• Employment: Your employer requires a BSN to pay your salary and deduct taxes.
• Healthcare: You need a BSN to apply for Dutch health insurance and register with a GP.
• Banking: Opening a Dutch bank account usually requires a BSN.
• Taxes: All tax-related matters, including applying for tax deductions like the 30% ruling, hinge on your BSN.
• DigiD: The digital identification system for online government services also requires a BSN for application and activation.

The BRP Registration Process

Registering in the BRP is done through your local municipality (gemeente). The process typically involves:

Step 1: Make an Appointment

Contact the municipality of the city where you will be living to schedule an appointment for first registration (eerste inschrijving). Many municipalities allow you to book online. It's often wise to do this as soon as you have a confirmed address.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Ensure you have all necessary documents ready for your appointment. These typically include:

• Valid identification: Your passport or EU/EEA identity card.
• Proof of address: Your rental contract, purchase agreement for a house, or a declaration from the main occupant of the property stating you live there (often requiring their ID as well).
• Birth certificate: An original, legalised/apostilled birth certificate. It may need to be translated by a sworn translator if not in Dutch, English, German, or French. Check your specific municipality's requirements carefully.
• Marriage certificate/Divorce decree (if applicable): Similar requirements for legalisation/apostille and translation.
• Residence permit (if applicable): For non-EU/EEA citizens.

Step 3: Attend Your Appointment

During the appointment, a municipal official will register your details in the BRP. You'll be asked questions to confirm your identity and information. This is also when you'll typically receive your BSN, either immediately or via post shortly after.

What Happens After Registration?

Once your BRP registration is complete, several important things follow:

• Receipt of BSN: You will receive your BSN, which is crucial for almost all administrative tasks. Keep it safe!
• Official Residence: You are now officially recognized as a resident of the Netherlands.
• Eligibility for DigiD: You can now apply for and activate your DigiD.
• Access to Services: You can proceed with opening a bank account, arranging health insurance, and registering with a GP.
