When to Apply for an Extension

The IND recommends applying for an extension approximately 3 months before your current residence permit expires. It is crucial to submit your application on time, as processing can take several weeks or even months. Applying late could lead to a gap in your legal residence status, which can have serious consequences.

General Requirements for Extension

To extend your residence permit, you generally need to demonstrate that you still meet the original conditions under which your permit was granted, and often some additional ones:

• Valid Purpose of Stay: Your original reason for residency must still be valid. For example, if you have a Highly Skilled Migrant permit, you must still be employed by a recognised sponsor and meet the salary threshold.
• Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the intended end date of your extended permit.
• Registered Address: You must have a registered address in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP).
• Sufficient Income: You (or your sponsor) must continue to have sufficient, stable, and independent income. The specific income requirements vary by permit type and are adjusted by the IND semi-annually.
• No Criminal Record/Public Order Threat: You must not have committed any criminal offenses and must not pose a threat to public order or national security.
• Civic Integration (if applicable): Depending on your original permit and nationality, you may need to prove you have made sufficient progress with civic integration (inburgering) or have successfully passed the exam. This is usually more relevant for those on certain family permits or aiming for permanent residence.

The Application Process for Extension

The process for extending your permit is similar to the initial application but usually less complex as your details are already with the IND.

1. Online or Paper Application: Most extensions can be applied for online via the IND portal (especially if you have a recognised sponsor). For others, a paper form may need to be submitted.
2. Gather Required Documents:
   • A copy of your valid passport.
   • Your current residence permit card.
   • Proof of income (e.g., recent salary slips, employment contract, tax returns).
   • Proof that your original purpose of stay is still valid (e.g., employer declaration, enrollment certificate for students).
   • Proof of health insurance.
3. Pay the Application Fee: There is a fee for extending your residence permit. This fee must be paid during the application process and is non-refundable.
4. IND Assessment: The IND will review your application and documents. During this period, if your current permit expires, you are usually allowed to remain in the Netherlands while awaiting a decision. You may receive an "Article 8 declaration" (artikel 8-brief) confirming your legal stay.
5. Decision and New Card: Upon approval, you will receive a letter from the IND instructing you to collect your new residence permit card from an IND desk. This new card will reflect your extended period of stay.

Common Scenarios for Extension

What If Your Purpose of Stay Changes?

If your reason for staying in the Netherlands changes (e.g., from student to worker, or from partner to independent self-employed), you typically cannot simply extend your current permit. Instead, you will need to apply for a 'change of purpose' (verblijfsdoel wijzigen), which is essentially a new application for a different type of residence permit.
